GSR II & Cyber Security: What applies from July 2026 – and what it means for you.

Since July 7, 2026, only motorhomes that meet the requirements of General Safety Regulation II (GSR II) are allowed to be newly registered in the EU. Here you can learn what assistance systems are now mandatory, what that means for the price and weight, and why you do not need to retrofit your existing motorhome.

GSR II from 2026 – The Most Important Things at a Glance

Starting date: From July 7, 2026, the GSR II will apply to all newly registered motorhomes in the EU.

About a dozen assistance and safety systems are mandatory, plus cybersecurity according to UN R155/R156

No retrofit requirement for already approved vehicles

Overweight under 10 kg. According to industry estimates, the additional cost is around €1,000 to €3,000.

Ahorn Camp Models from the 2026 model generation are already GSR II-compliant.

What is the GSR II?

The General Safety Regulation II – officially Regulation (EU) 2019/2144 – is the European vehicle safety regulation. It makes assistance and safety systems, which were often expensive add-ons until now, standard equipment. The goal is to significantly reduce accidents caused by fatigue, distraction, or reduced visibility.

This is particularly noticeable in the case of recreational vehicles: Larger dimensions, more weight and longer braking distances make active assistance systems particularly effective here.

Why is GSR II only applicable to motorhomes from 2026 onwards?

Mobile homes are built in several stages: The chassis manufacturer supplies the base vehicle, while the motorhome manufacturer builds the interior. For such vehicles with a specific purpose, the EU has provided a longer transition period than for passenger cars and vans.

July 2022

Start of a new era Types
Newly developed passenger car and van models must have the systems on board.

July 7, 2024

Mandatory for passenger cars and vans
All newly registered passenger cars and vans. Newly homologated motorhomes are also included.

July 7, 2026

Mandatory for all motorhomes
Every newly registered motorhome must meet GSR II.

Which assistance systems are mandatory since GSR II?

The full scope applies to motorhomes weighing up to 3.5 tons. Here you can see an overview of what the individual systems do in everyday use and what our Ahorn Camp motorhomes will bring from the model generation 2026 onwards.

System What it does Renault Master
Intelligent speed assist (ISA)Recognizes speed limits and warns if you drive fasterSeries
Emergency braking assistantAutomatically brakes if a rear-end collision is imminentSeries
Emergency lane keeping assistantSlowly steer back when you unintentionally leave the laneSeries
Warning signs of fatigueRecognizes declining concentration and recommends a breakSeries
Rear view camera / Rear view warningDisplays or reports obstacles during maneuveringSeries
Emergency brake lightThe brake lights flash when the brakes are applied fully and warn the rear-seat passenger.Series
Tire pressure monitoring (TPMS)Reports pressure loss before it becomes criticalSeries
Event data storage (EDR)Stores driving data shortly before and after an accidentSeries
Alcohol Interlock PreparationInterface for a retrofit alcohol tracking deviceSeries
Cybersecurity (UN R155) & Software updates (UN R156)Protects vehicle electronics from tampering and backs up updatesSeries

And motor homes weighing over 3.5 tons?

Different requirements apply to heavy motorhomes. These include, among other things, fatigue warning systems, intelligent speed assistance, a rear view camera, and preparation for an alcohol driving ban.

Are motor homes becoming heavier and more expensive?

Being overweight

under 10 kg

Sensors, cameras, and control units weigh little. Compared to the total weight of a motorhome, this is practically negligible – your load remains virtually unchanged.

Additional fee (industry estimate)

approx. 1,000-3,000 €

Chassis manufacturers pass on the costs for technology, software, and homologation in their list prices. The exact surcharge depends on the manufacturer, engine type, and equipment.

In addition to a noticeably higher level of safety, this means a vehicle that retains value even when it is subsequently resold.

Do I need to retrofit my motorhome?

No. GSR II applies exclusively to new registrations from July 7, 2026. Your already registered motorhome retains its registration unchanged. There is no retrofit requirement.

The situation is different for new vehicles without GSR II equipment: Many dealers have registered such vehicles before the deadline. As a result, they are often offered at a lower price, but are legally considered used vehicles. Therefore, when purchasing a vehicle, be sure to check the date of first registration.

What happens to older vehicles without GSR II?

Vehicles that have already been produced and have a valid type approval may, within the framework of a Transition period (Derogation) continue to be sold and newly registered. Therefore, they will not suddenly lose their eligibility for registration.

However, in practice, it often turns out that:
Such vehicles are coming under price pressure as they no longer meet the latest legal and technical standards.

Impacts on the motorhome body

GSR II affects not only the chassis, but also the Structure.
Reversing cameras and parking sensors will have to be seamlessly integrated in the future, with prescribed installation heights, fields of vision, and no shadowing from the body structure. Other sensors must also not be obscured.

For bodybuilders, this means:
