Self-sufficient on the road with Ahorn Camp - planning electricity in your motorhome correctly
More and more Vanlife-fans and Motorhome owners want one thing: self-sufficient camping - independent of campsites, power columns and permanent pitches. But for this to really work, you need the right power concept in your motorhome. In this article, we explain how you can significantly extend your downtime with the right Ahorn Camp accessories and what you should look out for when it comes to batteries, solar systems and the like.
Already self-sufficient as standard?
An 80 Ah AGM battery is already installed in all Ahorn Camp models - whether van or semi-integrated. This battery forms the basis of your on-board power supply.
- Ideal for short trips or weekend excursions where you want to be without a power connection and other charging options for a maximum of 1-2 days.
- Chargers are preset to AGM at the factory, but can easily be converted to lithium.
Important: The real usable capacity of an AGM battery is approx. 50 %, as deep discharge should be avoided. This means that only around 40-50 Ah is effectively available from 80 Ah - depending on use.
More power with maple camp accessories
So that you can be self-sufficient for longer - e.g. B. for longer trips, off-grid vacations or working on the road - there are several useful upgrades:
Retrofitting a second AGM battery
You can add a second AGM battery to almost all Ahorn models.
- Advantage: doubling your capacity to 160 Ah (approx. 80-90 Ah usable)
- Disadvantage: Each battery weighs around 28 kg - the additional weight is particularly important for panel vans
The alternative:
Lithium batteries - lightweight, powerful, long-lasting
A lithium battery (LiFePO4) is the premium class when it comes to modern, efficient power supply in motorhomes. At Ahorn Camp, we have two sizes of lithium batteries: a 100 Ah battery and a 165 Ah battery.
- 100 Ah lithium battery ≈ double the usable capacity compared to 80 Ah AGM (almost 90-95 Ah usable)
- 165 Ah lithium battery ≈ self-sufficient for up to a week - ideal for frequent users
- 13 kg lighter than AGM - saves weight and charging time (a 100 Ah lithium battery compared to an 80 Ah AGM battery)
- BMS system with integrated Bluetooth: You can see the charge status, temperature and consumption live on your smartphone
Especially recommended for working from a motorhome or for anyone who wants to charge and operate many devices on the road.
How do I charge my batteries autonomously?
Self-sufficiency only works if you generate more energy than you consume - or at least recharge regularly. There are several options for this:
Shore power connection
Every Ahorn Camp vehicle has a CEE connection for an external power connection. This charges your on-board batteries via an integrated charger.
- For vans with the charger from Nord Elektronica (17 A)
- For Womos with the BC520 charger (16 A)
- Both chargers can be easily switched to lithium using microswitches
Ideal for camping or for charging at home in the driveway - fast, simple, reliable.
Solar panels: energy from the sun
An absolute must-have for self-sufficient travel in spring and summer: solar panels on the roof.
- 1 module = approx. 120 W → ideal for everyday use
- 2 modules = approx. 240 W → ideal for longer service life
- Continuous charging power during the day, perfect for southern destinations with lots of sunshine
A solar panel already ensures greater self-sufficiency with the standard AGM battery.
Combined with a lithium battery, you can cover your daily power requirements for a longer period of time - independent of shore power.
Charging booster - generate electricity while driving
A charging booster uses your vehicle's alternator to charge the body battery while driving. This is necessary as otherwise the alternator of the modern Euro 6 engine would switch off and never fully charge the body battery.
Advantages:
- Fitted as standard in our vans
- Particularly useful if you travel a little further every day
- Also compatible with AGM and lithium (switchable via microswitch)
Anyone who travels a lot (e.g. B. round trips, road trips), benefits enormously from charging boosters: The battery is always full, even without solar.
Standby Charger - charging the starter battery as well
If you stay at the campsite for a long time, the starter battery can discharge itself. The Standby Charger from Votronic charges it automatically as soon as shore power is connected.
- No additional power connection required
- Solves the problem of a discharged starter battery during longer breaks
- Charges with up to 3 A - perfect for trickle charging
Particularly practical in winter or when the vehicle is left motionless for long periods.
Inverter & grid priority circuit
You need 230 V on the road like at home? No problem.
The sine wave inverter (2,000 W) is ideal for this:
- Turns 12 V battery voltage into real 230 V
- Ideal for coffee machine, laptop power supply, small household appliances
- Can be controlled by remote control - no need to reach around
Note: The inverter also consumes power when idle - therefore always switch off when not in use.
Mains priority circuit
This clever additional function detects whether shore power is available - and automatically switches from inverter to mains operation.
- Prevents unnecessary discharge of the battery
- Ensures seamless switching, without interruption
Example configuration for 3-4 days of self-sufficiency
Do you want a good balance between price, weight and self-sufficiency? Our recommendation for average use:
- 1× 80 Ah AGM battery (standard)
- 1× charging booster - charges automatically while driving
- 1× 120 W solar panel - noticeably extends the service life
This allows 3-4 days of self-sufficient use if the engine is running from time to time and the charging booster can charge the body battery. If you want to optimize the weight and hang on for a few days, you should replace the AGM battery with a 100 Ah lithium battery.
