Child seat in a motorhome: safety on board
Traveling with children in a motorhome is an adventure for the whole family. To ensure that the trip is not only fun but also safe, the right child seat plays a key role. The safety of the youngest travelers is paramount, so it is important to know and implement the appropriate regulations.

Child seat in a motorhome: legal situation and regulations
In Germany and many other European countries, there are clear regulations for securing children in vehicles - including motorhomes. Here is an overview:
Germany: Children up to 150 centimeters or up to the age of 12 must be secured in a child seat.
The decisive factor is the number of registered seats (vehicle registration document, point S.1.).
Austria: Child seats are compulsory for children up to 135 centimeters or up to the age of 14.
Please note that the regulations may vary depending on the country you are traveling to. Find out about the regulations at your destination before setting off in order to avoid fines and danger.
Choosing the right child seat
Age and size categories:
- Baby car seats (group 0/0+): For newborns and babies up to approx. 13 kg.
- Child seats (Group 1): For children from 9 to 18 kg.
- Booster seats (group 2/3): For older children from 15 to 36 kg.
ECE test standard:
- Make sure that the seat complies with the ECE R44/04 or ECE R129 standard. These guarantee that the seat has passed comprehensive safety tests.
Mounting types:
- 3-point belt: Uses the belt of the motorhome.
- 5-point harness: Integrated harness in the child seat for additional safety.
- Reboarder: Rear-facing seats that are especially recommended for children under 15 months.
Mounting in the motorhome
The safest seating position is usually in the rear seat, preferably in the middle. The front passenger seat may only be used if the airbag can be deactivated. Special regulations apply to vehicles without rear seats.
Correct installation is essential. Many motorhomes offer Isofix attachments that allow the child seat to be fitted easily and securely. If Isofix is not available, this device can be retrofitted in some cases.
Safety checks before the journey
It is essential to check the child seat before every journey. Here are the most important points:
- Check the fastenings and retighten if necessary.
- Ensure that the child is correctly strapped in.
- Only use high-quality child seats with a valid test mark.
- Adapt the seat to the child's growth.
- Do not use used seats without proof of origin, as they may have accident damage.
