With the camper through Switzerland.Winter camping in Switzerland - At the beginning of February, Michael, Stefan and Lukas set off on a ski tour in Switzerland with our ACT 690 New Face Edition. The trip began with picking up the camper from our Ahorn Camp headquarters in Speyer am Rhein. They packed all their equipment into the camper and the three of them set off for the Engadin in Switzerland. Now the 2-week adventure "Winter camping in Switzerland" could begin. On the way to the Julier Passan Eldorado for ski tourers, we bought some food for the coming days. The weather was great and there had probably been some fresh snow shortly beforehand. Once we arrived at the pass, we strapped on our skis and got an impression of the area and the snow. As the day had already progressed a little, the sun soon disappeared behind the mountains and it immediately became much colder. We were glad when we got back to the warm Ahorn camper. Once there, we had something warm to eat and then made plans.
A question of conditions - Piz Benina or Piz Palü
On the way to St. Moritz, our attention inevitably fell on the Piz Bernina and the mountains all around. Unfortunately, the conditions were not good enough for a ski tour on Piz Bernina - but perhaps they would be good enough for Piz Palü next door? The weather forecast promised good weather in two days. After consulting the locals about the conditions on the mountain, we decided to give it a go. We used the remaining time to check out some photo spots in the area and run errands for the upcoming ski tour.
Once there, we were suddenly alone in the midst of these giants.
Two days later, we woke up not far from the Bernina Pass to perfect weather - the anticipation was great. We had a quick breakfast and then headed straight for the Diavolezza valley station, where we caught the first gondola up the mountain. Arriving at the Diavolezza Berghaus, we were overwhelmed by the view of the mountains - like an arena, famous peaks lined up one after the other. Before we put our skins on our skis, we had to descend a few meters towards the glacier. Once there, we were suddenly alone among these giants - only two other ski tourers were on the way, but they also had a different destination for the day and soon left our route. Roped up, we marched with our skis on our legs through the imposing glacier break towards the summit. We soon reached the eastern shoulder of Piz Palü and were finally able to enjoy the sun.
The highlight - the Palü ascent
After a short break and a small snack, we set off again. We left our skis on our shoulders and marched on with crampons on our feet and ice axe in hand. It would not have been possible to climb from the summit - the wind had done more damage up there than could be seen from the valley - the flanks were blown bare. The sometimes razor-sharp ridge is always a highlight of the Palü ascent - and this time was no exception. The conditions on the ridge were ideal and we soon reached the summit. We were really lucky with the weather - the view was magnificent with almost no wind. After enjoying the view for a short while, we returned to our skis. We feared that the descent over the wind-treated snow would be an ordeal - to our surprise, we were able to ski down the slopes to Morteratsch without any major problems. A great finish!
As Lukas was unfortunately not accompanying us that day, he was already waiting for us at the parking lot with the camper. This was very convenient for us - shortly after we reached the valley, the weather forecast changed and it became cold and wet. Let's get into the warm camper.
We were really lucky with the weather - the visibility was great with almost no wind.
Unfortunately, we had little luck with the weather in the days that followed - it poured with rain, even up high, which meant that our plans to go on more ski tours slowly faded. However, it was all the better to have a spacious and warm camper. We enjoyed the 3-star cuisine in the camper every day - in the evening we had the occasional beer or even a glass of wine.
Off to freeriding in Engelberg
After a few days, we made our way to the freeride mecca of Switzerland, Engelberg. The weather there promised to improve for a few days and the ski resort with its countless freeride options was high enough to perhaps catch some fresh snow after all. Once we arrived, we were disillusioned - the snow conditions looked miserable and the weather was also bad. We checked into a winter campsite and emptied or filled the tanks of our camper.
Towards the evening, the predicted improvement in the weather set in and held for the next few days, so that we were able to spend three more relaxed days on the mountain. To our regret, however, the snow conditions were not the best - but with a little bit of intuition we were still able to find untouched, good snow.
And so we were able to set off on our journey home with peace of mind. We were a little skeptical at first - winter camping in Switzerland? Definitely an experience with the right vehicle!
