Winter camping in Switzerland

With the camper through Switzerland.

Wintercamping in Switzerland - At the beginning of February Michael, Stefan and Lukas started with our ACT 690 New Face Edition to go ski touring in Switzerland. The trip began with picking up the motorhome at our Ahorn Camp headquarters in Speyer am Rhein. They packed all their equipment into the camper and the three of them set off for the Engadin in Switzerland. Now the 2-week adventure "Wintercamping in Switzerland" could start. Through the following travel report and the impressive pictures you can accompany the young men on their journey. Enjoy reading and let them inspire you.

On the way to the Julierpass, an El Dorado for ski tourers, we bought some food for the next days. The weather was great and there might have been some fresh snow just before. Arrived at the pass we put on our skis and got an impression of the area and the snow. After the day had progressed a little bit, the sun soon disappeared behind the mountains and it became much colder. We were glad when we were back in the warm Ahorn camper. There we got something warm to eat first - afterwards plans were made.

A question of conditions - Piz Benina or Piz Palü

On the way to St. Moritz our attention was inevitably drawn to the Piz Bernina and the mountains around it. Unfortunately the conditions were not good enough for a ski tour on the Piz Bernina - but maybe they would be enough for the Piz Palü next door? The weather forecast promised good weather in two days. After consulting with locals about the conditions on the mountain we decided to try it. We used the remaining time to check out some photo spots in the area and to do some shopping for the upcoming ski tour.

Once there, we were suddenly alone in the middle of these giants.

Two days later we woke up not far from the Bernina Pass in best weather - the anticipation was great. We had a quick breakfast and then immediately set off for the Diavolezza valley station, where we took the first gondola up the mountain. Arriving at the Diavolezza Berghaus we were overwhelmed by the view of the mountains - like in an arena, famous peaks are lined up. Before we put our skins on the skis, we had to ski down some altitude meters towards the glacier. Once there, we were suddenly alone in the midst of these giants - only two other ski tourers were on their way, but they also had another day's destination and soon left our route. Roped up, we marched with our skis on our legs through the impressive glacier crevasse towards the summit. Soon we reached the eastern shoulder of the Piz Palü and could finally enjoy the sun.

The highlight - the Palü ascent

After a short break and a small snack we set off again. We left the skis on our shoulders and marched on with crampons on our feet and picks in our hands. A ride from the summit would not have been possible - the wind did more damage up there than could be seen from the valley - the flanks were blown clean. The partly razor-sharp ridge is always a highlight of the Palü ascent - this time as well. The conditions at the ridge were ideal and so we soon reached the summit. We were really lucky with the weather - the visibility was great with almost no wind. After a short enjoyment we went back to the skis. We were afraid that the descent over the wind-treated snow would be an ordeal - to our surprise we were able to swing down the slopes to Morteratsch without any big problems. A great finish!

After Lukas unfortunately did not accompany us on this day, he was already waiting for us with the camper at the parking lot. That came in very handy - shortly after we reached the valley the weather changed and it got cold and wet. Let's go into the warm camper.

We were really lucky with the weather - the visibility was great with almost no wind.

Unfortunately, we were not very lucky with the weather in the following days - it was pouring down like buckets, unfortunately also up to the top, so that our plans to make further ski tours slowly disappeared. But the better it was to be on the way with a spacious and warm camper. Every day we enjoyed the 3 star cuisine in the camper - in the evening we had the odd beer or even a glass of wine.

Off to freeriding in Engelberg

After a few days we set off to the Freeride Mecca of Switzerland, to Engelberg. There the weather promised to get better for a few days and the ski area with its countless freeride variations was high enough to catch some fresh snow. Arriving there, disillusionment set in - the snow conditions looked miserable and the weather was also bad. We checked in at a winter campground and emptied and filled the tanks of our camper.

Towards the evening the predicted weather improvement occurred and then held for the next days, so that we could spend three more casual days on the mountain. Unfortunately, the snow conditions were not the best - with a little bit of intuition we were still able to find good, untouched snow.

And so we could start our journey home afterwards. In the beginning we were a bit sceptical - winter camping in Switzerland? With the right wheels definitely an experience!
